LIATE DESIGN

No. 54

LIATE DESIGN were engaged by the clients to oversee the design, supply and installation of this beautifully detailed Italian kitchen in a family home extension in Central London. The monochromatic aesthetic was a strong preference for the clients who wanted to create a peaceful and harmonious space with generous work surfaces to encourage congregation and social interaction.

The clients undertook a full renovation and extension project within their family home to accommodate their expanding family as well as to achieve a return on investment. The space was completely reconfigured and extended to incorporate a generous kitchen with plenty of full-height storage, dining, and living areas that extended onto the same-level south-facing terrace. The polished concrete floors inside and out allowed for a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

To ensure the kitchen furniture resembled bespoke joinery rather than standard cabinetry, we purposefully excluded wall units and instead opted for a stone splashback extending to the ceiling, complemented by discreet ambient integrated lighting and a floating stone shelf showcasing the clients’ collection of handcrafted pottery. The base units throughout are finished in spray matt lacquer. The island’s long and slim dimensions, supported by a wrought steel leg (which blends into the background of the dark tall units), create an impression of lightness and balance. The natural stone used is White Macaubas quartzite, whose delicate veining introduces much-needed softness, harmony, and balance to the monochromatic scheme.

The tall units are crafted from dark-stained oak veneer with subtle grain textures visible and integrated recessed handles, further enhancing their bespoke joinery appearance. They feature a pocket door system for additional concealed worktop space designed for plugged-in appliances
